- Curator's comments
- After a lost composition by Rosso Fiorentino; see 'Rosso Fiorentino', Washington 1987, cat. No.103. The attribution of the plate is discussed, and the names of Mignon and Master G. R. have also been suggested.
Rosso's composition is recorded in three drawings and the present print (see 1863,0110.6; Bibliothèque nationale de France, B-5 (A) Boîte FOL; and a further skilled copy which was formerly in the collection of Lorser and Helen Lundeberg Feitelson, and sold at Christie's New York in 1998: 'Old Master Drawings, French and Northern Schools, 30 January 1998, lot 204).
We do not know the intended location of this religious scene. The ornamental border and central composition were certainly conceived as one: the three-faced Trinity at the top, from which emanate rays of light, links them both physically and iconographically. Jenkins 2017.
