- Curator's comments
- There has been disagreement in the literature regarding the authorship of this design. While Bartsch, Herbet and Mortari believed that Rosso was the inventor, Béguin and Cordellier have suggested Primaticcio as a possible author (Béguin, Review of 'Henri Zerner, "École de Fontainebleau, Gravures". Paris, Arts et métiers graphiques 1969', 'Revue de l'art', 5, 1969, p. 105; Cordellier in verbal comment to Jenkins). A third artist, Francesco Salviati, has also been associated with this composition (Kusenberg, 'Le Rosso', Paris, 1931, p. 170). Jenkins 2017.
