Curator's comments
After one of the six original compositions designed by Primaticcio for the vestibule of the Porte Dorée, Fontainebleau. The corresponding preparatory drawing is kept at the Musée du Louvre (inv. 8566); see 'École de Fontainebleau', Paris 1972, cat. No.324. The compositional differences between Fantuzzi's print and Primaticcio's drawing include the shifting of the setting sun to the right, and an adaptation of the original square design to an oval.
