- Curator's comments
- A drawing by Mathijs Cock in the Louvre (inv. 20745) shows this same view of a bay and a distant town, with St Augustine at the centre of the image. In the Monogrammist IQV's etching, this religious figure has been replaced with a tree. Jenkins 2017. Also see 'École de Fontainebleau', Paris 1972, cat. No.365.
The print is one of a series of 20 ornamental frames surrounding a landscape, by the Monogrammist IQV. See 1851,0208.106 for details on this group.
