- Curator's comments
- The inventor of this frame is not known. Du Cerceau depicted a variation of the same composition in his series of thirty-two 'Petits Compartiments de Fontainebleau', dating to c. 1545–47 (see Fuhring, 'Catalogue sommaire des estampes', in 'Jacques Androuet du Cerceau "un des plus grands architectes qui se soient jamais trouvés en France" ', Paris 2010, p. 306). The extra details illustrated by Du Cerceau seem to indicate that the frame formed part of an existing decorative scheme. For example, the lower frieze of garlands adorns what appears to be a strip of panelling that is inset between two pedestals. Jenkins 2017.
