- Curator's comments
- The plate is not signed, but Zerner ('École de Fontainebleau', Paris 1972, cat. No.361) finds the execution of the stippled parts characteristic of the Monogrammist IQV's manner. Also see exhib. LACMA 1988, cat. No.85.
The same composition has also been engraved by Léon Davent (1851,0208.97); see the entry for that plate in the 'The French Renaissance in Prints' catalogue (Los Angeles 1994, cat. No.47), notably for the doubts concerning the identification of the scene. At the extreme right of the image, the Monogrammist IQV depicts a small boy, whereas Davent shows a woman in profile. Otherwise the placement and poses of the figures are the same in both prints. The Monogrammist IQV fills the background with rocks, trees and other landscape details. Jenkins 2017.
It is not known where at Fontainebleau this image was depicted.
