- Curator's comments
- It is traditionally believed that the original composition, attributed to Rosso Fiorentino, was designed for the Galerie François I, Fontainebleau; see 'École de Fontainebleau', Paris 1972, cat. No.312; 'Rosso Fiorentino', Washington 1987, cat. No.96; and 'The French Renaissance in Prints', Los Angeles 1994, cat. No.39. The painting of this subject visible today on the west wall of the Galerie is a nineteenth-century copy. See Jenkins 2017.
