- There appears to be no lettered state of this print which suggests that it was made as a private plate.
A slightly different version, also unlettered but perhaps earlier, has been dated to 1844 from an inscription by G. R. Gray on an impression in a private collection (information from Prof. R. B. Williams, November 2013).
It is assumed that "Moore", the lithographer, was J W Moore, who worked for Gray's brother, John Edward Gray, on "Gleanings from the Menagerie and Aviary at Knowsley Hall" in 1846 (copy in the Department of Prints and Drawings, 165.c.21).
