- Curator's comments
- Despite what the title claims this print depicts Bonaparte as General and not as First Consul.
The complete inscription normally reads 'Painted by Bonevell at Paris - Engraved by P. Dawe' and 'Published Nov. 1, 1800, by D. Gaily, No. 263, High Holborn, & P. Dawe, No.44, the top of Wall Street, Oxford Strt'.
The print is signed by 'P. Dawe', who might be Philip Dawe, a British mezzotinter; however Philip Dawe is believed to have died around 1791.
