Plate 19: The Plague of Athens, after a painting traditionally attributed to Poussin but by Michael Sweerts; an agora filled with people in distress, some lying on the ground, some in prayer others raising their arms to the heaven, in the foreground lies two women on mattresses and ruined pillars, either dead or very sick; in the foreground, at left, a man standing beside the body of a woman and tearing his hair out; proof state.
