- This is a late impression, reworked, of the plate executed in 1599 (the title of the 1599 version reads 'Agé de 47 / 1599' instead of 'Agé de 51 / 1603'). The upper part of the composition shows signs of additional burin work hiding the wear of the plate. The 1603 version is not recorded in the IFF.
The plate was later altered into a portrait of Henri III of France (see 1856,1213.180).
The same equestrian portrait was engraved by another artist for the title-page of a book published in 1603, see 1896,1230.17
