One of the Sovereign's canopy-bearers taking part in the ceremony of the Order of the Garter on St George's day, April 23rd; standing to left and looking up at the canopy (not seen) which he supports by a pole held before him, wearing doublet over petticoat breeches, and large cannons over stockings
Black chalk (some soaked in oil to darken the tone) and white chalk, on blue-grey paper

The canopy borne over the Sovereign in the Garter procession was supported by Gentlemen of the Privy Chamber, as seen in Hollar's etching 'The Grand Procession' in Elias Ashmole's 'Institution, Laws & Ceremonies of the most Noble Order of the Garter', 1672 (see Stainton & White 1987, p. 132).
