Curator's comments
The composition is based on a pen and brush drawing, now in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, inv.no.N121 (dated around 1562). The plate was probably finished by 1563, when Galle left the employ of Hieronymus Cock to establish himself as an engraver and print publisher in Haarlem. Literature: Manfred Sellink, in J. van Grieken - G. Luijten - J. van der Stock, "Hieronymus Cock: The Renaissance in Print", exh.cat. Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels and Fondation Custodia in Paris, New Haven and London, 2013, cat.no.69.
