- Curator's comments
- Highmore painted his sequence of 12 canvases in 1744 to take advantage of the popularity of Richardson's novel, published in 1740/1. The paintings are now divided between the Tate, Fitzwilliam and Melbourne. The series was always intended for engraving (following on from Hogarth's 'Marriage-à-la-mode' series), and was entrusted to the skilful French engravers resident in London, Truchy and Benoist.
