- Summary of J.Rowlands 'Drawings by German Artists and Artists from German- speaking regions of Europe in the Department of Prints and and Drawings at the British Museum: the Fifteenth Century, and the Sixteenth Century by Artists born before 1530', London, BM Press,1993, no.183:
'This and 1846,0613.8 were drawn in connection with Dürer's work for the third book of his treatise on the proportion of the human body, in which he explains various devices for distorting the proportions of the body. According to Strauss, Dürer has effected the distortion here by use of the 'felscher', the falsifier (Dürer, 'Human Proportion', Signature S; rough diagrammatic drawings of the various devices are in the British Library, Sloane Ms. 5230, fol. 62 recto). As a result, the upper half, that is if divided into eight head lengths, four heads long, has been slightly elongated, while the lower half remains four heads long. This calculation has been based on 1846,0613.8 as the figure in this drawing is complete. The approximate dating proposed by Rupprich of 1512/13 seems to be reasonable for both drawings'
