- Curator's comments
- The print belongs to a series of fifteen engravings of the 'Life of the Virgin and Christ' executed in a style called by Hind the 'Broad Manner' and recently attributed to Francesco Rosselli; for a discussion of this group see the entry for Hind, B.I.1.II (1870-6-25-1048).
The present engraving is the second state of the print; the first state is known only in a falsified impression with pen-and-ink additions (in Vienna), which was possibly based on a true first state, now lost. The haloes of the Virgin and St Joseph at the r-hand margin have been shaded. The figure of the bearded man, seated with a book near the centre, is similar to that of 'Obadiah' in Rosselli's series of 'The Prophets' (see Mark J. Zucker, 'The Illustrated Bartsch, Commentary', vol. 24, part. 2, 1994, pp. 53-55, no. 039).
Hind suggested on the basis of the similar size and shape that this and the 'Agony in the Garden' (Hind, B.I.6.II) were engraved on either side of the same plate.
