- Curator's comments
- This damaged impression belongs to a group of engravings of miscellaneous subjects, catalogued by Hind as executed in the 'Broad Manner', now attributed to Francesco Rosselli. For this group see the entry for Hind B.III.9 (P&D 1875-6-12-18).
It is the first state of the print, without the reworking and various additions (e.g. the raindrops in the sky); examples of the first state are in Hamburg, Vatican and Vienna; the only surviving impression of the second state is in Hamburg. This first version of the subject was engraved on the recto of the same plate as the 'Adoration of the Magi' (Hind B.III.2 and Mark J. Zucker, 'The Illustrated Barsch, Commentary', vol. 24, part 2, 1994, p. 76, no. 061), as noted in an entry in the Rosselli's inventory: '1o diluvio di un foglio reale, e una nativita'" (a Deluge of one royal folio, and a Nativity).
The composition of the 'Deluge' corresponds exactly, and in the same direction, to a pen-drawing on vellum in the Kunsthalle at Hamburg, now thought to be by Maso Finiguerra or his workshop and connected with the so-called Finiguerra group of drawings in the Uffizi, Florence (for a reproduction see B. Degenhart, A. Schmitt, 'Corpus der italienischen Zeichnungen 1300-1450, Teil I: Sud-und Mittelitalien', 2, Berlin, 1968; pl. 935). Present in the drawing but not in this first version of the print is the motif of the raindrops in the sky and covering the ark.
The artist returned to the subject in a later print in which the composition is simplified and the confused spatial relationship of the figures in the earlier engraving is clarified (1865-8-12-88; Hind B.III.2 and Mark J. Zucker, 'The Illustrated Barsch, Commentary', vol. 24, part 2, 1994, p. 78, no. 062).
