- Curator's comments
- The remains of the original woodcut have been cut out and mounted on paper. The snake and lance have been drawn in ink and colours and do not seem to have any connection with the original cut.
Dodgson (in "Woodcuts of the XV Century in the British Museum", vol. II, London 1935, no. 190) notes that the cut was probably produced in the first quarter of the fifteenth century in Southern Germany or Austria, where St Florian was often invoked for protection against fire.
