- Curator's comments
- See 1843,0513.133 for a related print which is annotated in pencil on the recto 'Cascade in blue hole River. Montpelier. St. James's Jamaica. Engraved by W. Sharp, from a Drawing by T. Hearne, made from a Sketch by Robertson in 1766.'
The painting by Robertson which formed the basis of the present print was sold at Sotheby's 30 June 2005 (lot 61): 'Two Gentlemen surveying their estate in Jamaica' (sold with its pair, 'Unloading cargo by the shore, at Port Morant, Jamaica'). Robertson painted several works for William Beckford of Somerley who engaged him to travel to Jamaica with him in the 1770s to paint views of his estate. These were exhibited at the Society of Artists between 1775-77.
