- Curator's comments
- Based on a drawing by Clarac, now in the Louvre, which was shown at the Salon of 1819, after his return from Brazil the previous year. The etching was listed in Bibliographie de la France for the 8 November 1823, and is the same size as the drawing. An early etched state with remarque is known.
The donor was the Principal Librarian and Director of the BM, and was presumably given the engraving by Clarac when visiting the Louvre (or when Clarac was in London).
