Findspot: Heiltz L'Evêque 'Charvais' (Marne)
The well-known Hallstatt cemetery at Charvais was discovered in a quarry and excavated by Dr Mougin in 1876. His publication (Mougin, 1877, Fouilles du cimetière de Charvais, ‘Bulletin de la société des sciences et arts de Vitry-le-François’ (8), 245-68) was sufficiently unobtainable to warrant re-publication by Lepage (Lepage, L., 1966, Le cimetière hallstattien de Charvais à Heiltz-l’Evêque (Marne), ‘Revue archéologique de l’est et du centre-est’ (17), 70-87). All Mougin's finds went to the museum at Vitry-le-François (Mougin 1877, 268, note), where they were destroyed in a fire at the Hôtel-de-Ville in 1944 (Lepage 1966, 70). Lepage's re-publication was based solely on the original publication. Smith, R.A., 1925, ‘A guide to the antiquities of the Early Iron Age’ (second edition), London, 50.
(a) Morel (Morel, L., 1891, Sépultures gauloises découvertes à Heiltz-l’Evêque et à Somme-Suippes (Marne) BAC, xlii, lxiv, 91) published artefacts that he had acquired from an isolated grave discovered some time previously. The finder, a quarry worker, had since died.
The following objects were found ML.1900, 1862 and ML.1852-ML.1854 (five bronze anklets were found, but only three survived at the time of publication).
Context: Bangles; Other decorated bronze bangles
There is a very similar bangle from Fontaine-sur-Coole (Nicaise, A., 1884a, ‘L’époque gauloise dans le Département de la Marne’ Paris, pl. 3, fig. 4), cf. also the anklets, ML.1852-ML.1854.
