Iron band-shaped umbo with rounded wings, from wooden shield. Essentially complete, only a little plaster restoration. Nails have survived which would have been used to attach the umbo to the shield. It is 183 mm long in total, the wings are 70 mm wide and the dome is 70 mm long. The nail heads are 10 mm and 14 mm diameter. Wood grain vertical apart from one small piece that is horizontal and perhaps part of the handle.

Findspot: Reims (Marne)
Provenance given in Morel (1898, 156) and in the Register, but there are no further details. Schmit (Schmidt, E., 1928, Répertoire abrégé de l’archéologie du Département de la Marne des temps préhistoriques à l’an mille, ‘Mémoires de la société d’agriculture, commerce, sciences et arts du départment de la Marne’ (2nd ser., 22, 1926-7 and 1927-8), 227) mentions La Tène burials from Reims. The labels surviving on the pots, unique to this group, are plain white and rectangular with 'Reims' written in black ink. The provenance Reims is not included in any of the printed provenance labels, but it does occur as part of Morel's address on PA and PG labels.
