- Curator's comments
- Text from Eth Doc 1892, no. 42: Made by men from home produced white cloth made by the women and felted by the men, and home produced black braid. The centre back panel has an additional full-length strip, narrow at the shoulders and widening towards the bottom edge. The front panels also have a similar strip which is shaped to form the armholes. The garment has been cut to shorten it at some time. The full length has been restored by the donor. There is a double row of black braid around all the seams, which is increased to three with the addition of tight loops at the chest opening and around the lower part of the complete back panel which has a deep vent. The additional braid is also around the inner corners of the bottom side panels. There is a small pocket formed of the same felt material lined with black braid. The back panel below the position of the sash is heavily decorated with bands of nine rows of black embroidery and strips of black felt with small triangles. The seam edges of the bottom front panels have felt strips and a double row of black embroidery with a ‘twig’ design. Some narrow black velvet ribbon trimming is missing from the back. The back panel has trimming and embroidery across the shoulders and down the armholes. At the chest opening there is a narrow strip of black velvet ribbon around a strip panel of white embroidery of lozenges with insert crosses.
