- Description
-
A woman's rectangular apron; handspun and handwoven. Made from two equal sized pieces of red wool fabric, hand sewn along one selvedge, creating a horizontal centre seam. There is a large-scale zigzag pattern at the bottom of the apron, worked in white cotton and blue and black wool. The sides of the apron have an elaborate vertical diamond pattern, outlined in white cotton and filled in with blue, black and orange wools. In the centre field are snowflake-shaped patterns, regularly spaced, on the diagonal, and worked in black wool. The patterning appears to be woven in supplementary weft, but there may be some embroidery too. The ties, sewn to the top corners, are different; one is made from a pale blue and red wool plait, the other from a red and blue round wool braid. A braid made of yellow cotton and gold-coloured metal strip is sewn on top of the centre seam. The main ground is somewhat unevenly dyed, indicating it was dyed in the piece and there are small holes in the lower part of the apron.
