- Curator's comments
- Eth Doc 1871: the clothing in this collection [Eu1993,07] and in Eu1994,01 were collected largely by Di Waller and Dan Lumley in the 1960s and early 1970s when Di Waller was based for some of the time in Skopje on a Leverhulme Scholarship.
The Sarakatsan people were traditionally nomadic sheep and goat herders found in Bulgaria, Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Such festive costumes were originally worn at weddings and on feast days but were later used for everyday wear. The textiles are woven and knitted using the wool and hair of their flocks. Today these costumes are worn only by older people in more remote areas. The knitted socks, gaiters and tasselled bag are made of vegetable-dyed yarns and are particularly finely worked.
