- Description

A woman's gathered skirt, a 'foustani': bands of coloured ribbon sewn onto black tabby fabric. The ground fabric is stitched to a black heavily fulled woven band, which has both narrow and wide black braiding sewn onto it. Thirteen bands of ribbon, sewn edge-to-edge: blue (2 tones), green and purple satin silk; black, tabby woven; and gold- and silver-coloured damask. Hem is made up of two wide bands of black braiding with a crocheted wool picot trim, a blue line at the edge. The side seams (two selvedges) have a machine stitched blue and grey striped fabric, sewn together with string, perhaps for the purpose of display for sale. Very heavy.
