Flaked flint axe, perhaps a roughout. Patchy grey and black flint. Blade and butt may be slightly worn. Several patches of cortex remain. Slightly convex sides tapered minimally to butt; rounded blade merges with sides; gently rounded butt merges with sides; blade and butt symmetrically opposed; thick profile.

(1) Letter E J Woodhead, Admiralty, Director of Works Dept/A W Franks 28 Nov 1873 - 'I send herewith the remaining ancient worked stones of which I spoke to you this morning. They were found in dredging the berth in which HMShip "Fisgard" lies off Greenwich Hospital and were sent here by Messrs Shelbourne (the Contractors for the work) of 38 Fore Street Limehouse. They were dredged up in 1872...' Sent at request of Col. C Pasley R.E. the present Director of works.
(2) Letter E J Woodhead/A W Franks, 29 Nov. 1873 - 'The stone implements were sent to Sir Andrew Clarke, former Director of Works. On Col. Pasley the present Director assuming office I purposed to send these objects with a number of others (models etc) to the Naval Museum at Greenwich Hospital but Col. Pasley thought justly that they might be better placed in your collection. It is thought, therefore, by Col. Pasley that they should be described as sent from the Admiralty without mention of his name'
