finger-ring
Object Type
finger-ring
Museum number
AF.423
Description
Gold finger-ring; flat polygonal hoop increasing in width towards the bezel facet. This is set with a gem that projects from the gold surface. The gem is a quartz, probably carnelian, apparently burnt to an opaque ivory colour, and is shaped as an oval hexagon with chamfered sides. The hexagonal face is engraved with a simple device that probably represents an anchor, while the bevelled side facets are cut with letters of an inscription in cameo: M/IH/I/VI/VA/S
