- Curator's comments
-
A large number of amorphous metal lumps (mostly copper alloy, with a very few examples in precious metal) have been recovered from the site (e.g. 2018,8017.193-325, 2013,8037.61-65). These may be debris from metalworking, or could be objects which have been deliberately destroyed by exposure to heat, such as on a cremation pyre.
-
As part of the Treasure process, non destructive X-ray fluoresence analysis was carried out on the surface of seven items from the assemblage now registered under stem 2017,8017. All were from the group of amorphous lumps thought to represtent casting waste or scrap. This object was shown to have a surface composition high in gold (60%) and silver (34%) with a small amount of copper (6%).
