- Curator's comments
- These tumblers were known as model i-103/2003 and were produced in different sizes (for the schnapps glasses of the same shape, see museum no. 2014,8024.134a-d). They came as a set of six, in original packaging also designed by Timo Sarpaneva in 1956 and made by Euran Paperi, Kauttu. The iconic Iittala 'i' symbol was designed by him at this time, and has been used by the company ever since. The 'i-glass' range with its soft muted colours was both a design and commercial success. Customers encouraged to choose a mixture of colours to produce harlequin sets. This set was intended to have two tumblers of each colour and the box echoes the colours inside. All the imnes were mould-blown with thin walls, the intensity of the colour varying according to the thickness of the walls. See N. Benson, 'Glass of the '50s & '60s. A Collector's Guide', London 2002, p.34.
