Thirty-hour long-case clock
Case:
Oak coloured stained pine case with forward-sliding flat-topped hood with no frieze. The hood door opens to the left and locks with a hook and pink fitted on the right side. There is no mask behind the door. The plain trunk has a hinged rectangular door with a brass escutcheon. The plain small base stands on a plain plinth.
Dial: Square single sheet brass dial with engraved leafy motif spandrels. The engraved chapter ring with roman numerals I-XII within two circles. The inner circle is calibrated for quarter-hours with a diamond mark at the half hours. Below the centre within the chapter ring is an engraving showing a tree-lined road with a fountain in the foreground, leading to a house with architectural ruins behind. The maker’s name and place are engraved below XII. Steel single-hour hand.
Movement: Weight-driven thirty-hour movement within two brass plates and four single-knopp brass pillars. Brass shrouds and sprockets for Huygens endless chain maintaining power. Going train with two brass wheels, each with four crossings. Anchor escapement, the brass escape wheel with four crossings. Pendulum control, the pendulum with plain steel rod and brass-covered lead bob.
Striking train with three brass wheels, each with four crossings, and a fly pinion with brass vanes. Striking controlled by a brass count-wheel mounted on the back plate and retained by a rectangular brass tension spring. Hours are struck on a bell mounted on a standard screwed to the back plate.
Motion work: A pinion of report mounted on the great wheel arbor drives the hour wheel which carries the single-hour hand. The hour wheel has a 12-point star wheel which releases the striking mechanism.
The chain drive passes around a solid brass pulley and through a lead ‘doughnut’ counter-weight.
