- Vicke Lindstrand was Kosta’s chief designer from 1950-73. His engraved glass - both the designs and the innovative shapes - did much to make Kosta a rival to Orrefors, the other great Swedish glass factory, where Lindstrand had worked from 1928-40. This vase is one of a series of designs for clear glass vases of unusual and often asymmetrical shape in which the entire surface of the vessel is exploited for a single image which can be viewed from different vantage points, creating a three dimensional effect, so that motifs visible through the glass wall overlap each other. The rim of this vase rises dramatically on one side to suggest a wave. A subtle combination of different engraving techniques is used to contrast the openwork nets with the solid boats and figures.
