- Curator's comments
- The colour and decoration inspired partly by Egyptian blue-glazed faience with underglaze black decoration, and partly by the 'Persian blue' glaze of Islamic pottery.
Longwy was one of the big Eastern French ceramic factories, much-admired from the 1870s onwards for its imitation cloisonné relief-enamelled decoration. The enamelled technique continued into the 20th century but was modernised by the employment of a number of outside artists, among whom Claude Lévy is known to have designed pieces for Primavera. This piece is very different from the relief cloisonné designs usually associated with Longwy and may have been part of a special line for the Primavera design studio in the Paris department store, Au Printemps.
For a vase of the same shape, but with different decoration, described as a cache-pot, see D. Dreyfus, 'Emaux de Longw'y, Paris 1998, p. 23.
