The Virgin lies in a bier surrounded by the eleven apostles and with the figure of Christ leaning over her. On top of the frame, within clouds, is God Sabaoth and the whole composition is flanked by the standing figures of two monastic saints (perhaps SS Anthony and Theodosius of the Kyivan Caves) in a hilly landscape, their hands clasped at their chests; behind them, buildings and trees. On a medallion beneath the inner frame: Church Slavonic inscription identifying scene.

- Curator's comments
The iconography of the Assumption is based on a number of texts: ‘The Word’ of John the Theologian, ‘The Word’ of John, Bishop of Solun, the scriptures of Andrew of Crete, of Germanos I, Bishop of Constantinople, and of Cosmas of Maum and John of Damascus. The composition was incorporated into the twelve great feasts cycle of the Orthodox liturgy. The icon of the Assumption was placed on the first tier of the iconastasis. The main features of the iconography of the Assumption were established during the ninth to eleventh centuries AD.
