- Curator's comments
- The iron mounts were forged at the Whitefriars Glassworks, using the same furnaces. Powell later supplied glass vessels for both Benson and Ashbee to mount in bronze or silver. But Powell's iron-mounted vessels pre-date Benson's and Ashbee's by at least a decade.
This vase is one of the largest iron-mounted vessels made by Powell.
This vase is illustrated in L. Jackson (ed), 'Whitefriars Glass: The Art of James Powell and Sons', exhibition catalogue, Manchester City Art Galleries, Shepton Beauchamp,1996 (pp.101 &155).
