- Curator's comments
- The hoard is composed of 42 objects. The first 23 objects were discovered by members of the West Sussex Metal Detecting Society while searching with metal detectors in October 1995. The finds were then reported and the West Sussex County Archaeologist commissioned Southern Archaeology to investigate the site; nos. 23-38 were retrieved with a metal detector from the spoil heap of the excavation in November 1995. Nos. 39-42 were found in plough soil in January 1996.
Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the 42 objects from Fittleworth by the British Museum indicated a surface gold content from approximately 78%. to 93%.
