- Curator's comments
- A Dutch tile imported for sale at Thomas Elsley, London. It appears as no. 70 in fig. 240, a tile catalogue issued by Elsley in c 1890, see R. and H. Myers, 'William Morris Tiles', Richard Dennis Publications, 1996, p. 139. For a discussion of Thomas Elsley's import and retailing business, see Myers, pp. 138-141.
This design also appears as no. 321, plate 18 in a Ravesteijn (later renamed Westraven N.V. Faience-en Tegelfabrik.) pattern book of tiles produced from 1880-1920 found at the Nederlands Tegelmuseum in Otterlo, Holland. Similar tiles were also made by the firm of J. van Hulst in Harlingen, Holland. The colour-scheme, however, is close to that used by Ravesteijn and illustrated in Peter Sprangers, 'Utrechtse tegels 1600-1900', Utrecht 2013, p.130, an illustration of a four-tile set of this pattern described as 'Monkey flower', from Elsley catalogue card 4, no.70 (presumably Elsley issued cards with different numbers at different dates).
