- Description
-
A ladle or spoon with a round bowl and a flat, decorated handle with a terminal in the shape of a curly bracket, one of a matching set of 10 ladles with monogram crosses (1994,0408. 52-61). The bowl is marked with rough concentric lines inside and outside. The handle attachment incorporates two large dolphins with their heads towards the bowl. They have large oval eyes with a central dot, a lateral line along the body, and additional short incised lines all over. Between the dolphins is a crudely engraved circle with a monogram cross within, its top towards the bowl. It is executed in double lines that flare out towards the border; the curve of the rho is a single line and is open, with a recurved tip producing an R shape. Along the straight handle runs a simple engraved scroll with groups of three points to suggest a vine or ivy scroll.
