Text from J. Rudoe, 'Decorative Arts 1850-1950. A catalogue of the British Museum collection'. 1994, no. 368, (Acquisitions 1991-1993)
The cup and matching saucer belong to the service that Behrens designed for his own house at the Darmstadt artists' colony (see 'Decorative Arts 1850-1950', Rudoe 1991, cat. 11), which formed part of the 1901 exhibition 'Ein Dokument Deutscher Kunst'. Behrens' service was decorated with the same pattern but in pale grey, not red. See R. Ulmer, Museum der Künstlerkolonie. Darmstadt n.d. (1990). cat. no. 5.
The plate is from a different service, using the same shapes, but with a denser applied pattern. Further examples of this alternative pattern can be found in the Hessisches Landesmuseum. See Nuremberg 1980, Germanisches Nationalmuseum, 'Peter Behrens und Nürnberg'. ed. P. Schuster, no. 65, and C.B. Heller, 'Kataloge des Hessischen Landesmuseum Nr. 12. Jugendstil, Kunst um 1900', Darmstadt 1982.
