The coarsely executed print, after George Cruikshank's 'Murat reviewing the Grand army!!!!', is disguised by a slap-dash wash of enamel colour. The painter unifies the ragged and dejected soldiers by portraying them in the same regimental colours, which emphasises a comic physicality. On the reverse Napoleon, on the back of the Devil, greets the Empress Marie Louise, “My reputation is gone forever - I must plead for Peace”. This image is based on Cruikshank’s Boney tir'd of War's Alarms Flies for Safety to his darlings arms, the title inspired by a military song of 1771.
