The service was called 'TAC 1' after 'The Architects Collaborative', an American architectural firm founded in 1945 by Gropius and seven other architects. The shape was designed by Walter Gropius and Louis McMillen (1916-98), one of the architects in the firm. The decoration in primary colours was called 'Bauhaus-Hommage 1' and was designed by Herbert Bayer.
