The information below was provided in part by Dr Anwen Cooper in 2018 as part of the ‘Grave Goods’ project, a collaboration between the University of Reading, the University of Manchester and the British Museum. The description is based on:
Philp, B. 2014. Discoveries and Excavations Across Kent: Digging Up the Past!
Burial 3 (Philp 2014, 11-2, figs. 2, 3 and 5):
Cremation burial within a rectangular pit 1.31m. x 1.18 m, with tapered sides (truncated but c. 0.45m deep upon excavation). The fill of brown loam was sealed with a mass of flints. The bucket (1990,0701.11.a-c) occupied a central position in the grave with two pottery vessels next to it (1990,0701.9-10 and 10.a; fig. 5 Nos. 3 and 4). The bucket contained two bronze brooches (one with a chain attached) (1990,0701.17 & 18) and about 2kg of cremated human bone (1990,0701.11.d). One of the pottery vessels (1990,0701.10; fig. 5 No. 4) also contained adult cremated bone (1990,0701.69). The other (1990,0701.9; fig. 5 No. 3) contained a copper alloy ring (1990,0701.19). Other finds from the burial were another copper alloy and two iron rings (1990,0701.14-16), an iron circular knife (1990,0701.13), and part of an animal carcass consisting of ribs and the spine (not yet identified) (1990,0701.61).
