- Curator's comments
This grisly image depicts the moment Louis XVI's head is held up by the second executioner in the presence of the Commandant Général, Antoine Joseph Santerre (1752–1809), and the King's Confessor, the Irishman Abbé Henry Essex Edgeworth(1745–1807). The print appeared in The New Wonderful Magazine and Marvellous Chronicle of Extraordinary Productions, Events and Occurrences in Nature and Art, London, 1793. A numbered key at the bottom identifies the equipment used and personalities involved in the execution.
The plate is signed with the name of the pottery owner, John Aynsley (fl. 1780-1809), who was in business at Lane End, Staffordshire, from about 1780 and marketed transfer-printed wares in the late 1780s. It is not clear whether he was a potter or merely a merchant, and it is likely that this print was engraved and printed by someone else for him. The same image and probably the prototype appeared in 'The Wonderful magazine, and marvellous chronicle; or, New weekly entertainer', published in 1793, where it is noted that it was 'Taken from a Drawing made on the spot by that most eminent Artist M. Le Brun'. (Bindman 1989, p.115)
