Patch-box; painted enamel on copper with a metal mount to box and lid and a mirror on the inside cover. The lid is painted in enamel with a scene of the execution of Louis XVI showing a man under the guillotine, his head rolling into a basket, watched by two onlookers. There is an inscription round the edge. Enamel damaged on left hand border.

- Curator's comments
The scene derives from William Lane's broadside (1856,0712.1101) entitled 'La Guillotine'. It is a rare subject on enamel boxes such as this one, which probably held black patches, or beauty spots.
