- Curator's comments
- This figure is a pair with Ariadne (1981,0101.434), and depicts Bacchus, Roman god of wine and pleasure. They are identified as nos. 193 and 194 in the Haslem and Bemrose lists. They are mentioned in a Derby Sale Catalogue of 18 and 19 February 1778 as 'One pair of figures Bacchus and Ariadne', and again on 11 December 1783. The figure is loosely derived from a marble sculpture by Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570) in the Bargello, Florence, however, 18th century prudery has masked the nudity of the original with classical costume.
