- Curator's comments
- The design has been attributed to Pugin, see Joan Jones, 'Minton. the first two hundred years', Shrewsbury 1993, p. 168 .
A similar design was noted as no. 796 in an undated pattern book in the Minton Archive. For examples in different colourways, see nos. 611 G and 796 G, sheet 11; no. 1084 X, sheet 4; and no. 1375 G, sheet 15 in a Minton catalogue of c 1885 (reprinted by Richard Dennis Publications, Shepton Beauchamp 1996). Pattern no. 611 G is shown with a border tile of the same motif, pattern no. 753 G, sheet 11 in the catalogue.
For the same pattern in different colours, see 1980,0307.97. For a plant stand incorporating a tile with a similar design, see Hans van Lemmen, 'Tiled Furniture' (Princes Risborough, Shire, 1989), p. 28.
