- Text from the Catalogue of the Hull Grundy Gift (Gere et al 1984), no. 583:
A similar memorial brooch in gold and black enamel with a shield shaped bezel and scrollwork ornament on the shoulders is illustrated in Zick 1980 (pl. 51 left; Private Collection). The inscription is dated 1844 and the hoop bears London hallmarks and the maker's mark W.E., possibly for William Eady, who is first recorded in 1821 at the same address as Thomas Eady; William entered his second mark in in 1837. These two rings may thus emanate from the same workshop.
The inscription on the ring follows the usual practice at this date of using the abbreviated Latin forms, ob for obit (died), aet for aetat (aged). (C.Gere)
Text from Ward, Cherry et al, 'The Ring from Antiquity to the Twentieth Century,' London 1981, pl.297.
This ring is of the same type as the Nelson memorial ring (Pl. 277). The bezel bears a ducal coronet and the device of the Duke of Northumberland; the outside of the hoop is inscribed: IN MEMORY OF, and the back of the bezel: HUGH DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND. The inside of the hoop is inscribed: OBT 11TH FEB. 1847. AT 61. The inscriptions demonstrate the use of the abbreviated Latin words obt (obit) for 'died' and at (aetate) for 'aged'. These abbreviations were widely used for memorial inscriptions at this date. The ring also has the hallmarks for London in 1846 and 1847.
