- Curator's comments
- Small mosaic panels of the antiquities of Rome were popular as travel souvenirs for the Victorian Grand Tourist, and were used to decorate small trinkets and accessories as well as jewllery. For a similar oval mosaic panel showing the Roman Forum, set into a cartouche-shaped paperweight of black Belgian marble dated 1840–60, see: 2013,8043.1. (Charlotte Gere)
For a documentary example in the Museum of London, showing the Roman Coliseum, see: C. Gere & J. Rudoe, 'Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria: A Mirror to the World', London, British Museum, 2010, fig. 500, p.494. (Charlotte Gere)
