Petochi (1981) dates similar mosaics as first half of the nineteenth century (pp. 116-17 and p.183). (Judy Rudoe)
The spaniel, denoting ‘fidelity’ was a popular mosaic motif in the nineteenth century. For a documentary example, owned by Lady Nias (née Isobel Laing), who lived in Rome in the early 1850s, see the gift to the Museum of London by Miss Caroline Nias, MoL A28556/17. (Charlotte Gere)
