At this date French was still widely used throughout Western Europe as the language of sentiment, and so French inscriptions cannot be taken as an indication of the country of origin. On the other hand, English, Italian and German were rarely used outside their countries, and inscriptions in these languages can be used as an indication of origin. (Charlotte Gere).
